DJ BIG JACKS _ BLACK MAGIC

The long awaited Black Magic mix is finally here! This is the first time DJ Big Jacks has dropped a release of this kind featuring 70 + minutes of modern soul magic from the late 70′s and early 80′s. While certain tracks have been sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Dilla, and Madlib among others, the focus here is not who has sampled what. Black Magic spotlights the original music itself, as a collection of personal favourites from the era mixed by Big Jacks and created for the lover in you. So without further delay we present to you, Black Magic…

Mogpaws – The CR8 APEscape

Mogpaws writes:

“This here is a mix specially crafted for the fine humans at CR8APES & Invisible-Friends.com. May it enter your brains and grant the high level of satisfaction one is accustomed to from the site.

I shan’t pinpoint any specific genres for this mix, but the selections are mostly very new and glued together by an emphasis on drums, percussion and enough horns to knock over a family of elephants. You can also find a fair chunk of piano and flute tucked in there. 35% female vocals, 35% male vocals and 30% instrumental.

Two of the tracks I ripped from vinyl before coming to Brazil and made the heinous error of not labeling them. They are from a record Jason Palma picked out for me about 7 years ago at Play De Record, so please help me fill in that gap.

If this is up your audio alley, wander over to http://www.mixcloud.com/mogpaws
Or http://www.simmer_down.podomatic.com/ to find more.”

DJ Jun – Tough Love 2

DJ Jun – Tough Love 2

One of the things that I really enjoy about creating mixes and podcasts is that I get to go through the crates and pick out tunes I don’t usually get to play out much.  Some of my most favorite tracks are those slower soul love jams that just melt you away with every listen, but end up taking a back seat to something more uptempo for the party.  The next mix is a compilation of just that…15 bangin’ soul love songs from the vinyl vault, which make up the second installment in the ‘Tough Love‘ series.

A big Shout to Boule at Consortium Distributions and Brian C for being dude.  If you’re in the Montreal area, CD quality versions of ‘Tough Love 2′ are being given away with purchases at the Consortium Pop-Up Shop on St. Laurent until the month’s end.  Grab’em before they’re gone.

Enjoy the mix!

Tracklist:

Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford – Nobody (Mpingo)
Ruby Andrews – You Made a Believer (Out of Me) (Zodiac)
Alice Clark – You Don’t Care (Mainstream)
Smith – Baby It’s You (Dunhill / ABC)

The Olympians – How Can I Love (Now That You’re Gone) (Truth & Soul)
Kings Go Forth – High On Your Love (Mr. C’s)
Eddie Kendricks – Intimate Friends (Tamla)
The Voices of East Harlem – Giving Love (Just Sunshine Records)
The Persuaders – Thin Line Between Love and Hate (ATCO)
Kool Blues – Can We Try Love Again (Capsoul)
