“Here it is…finally!!! What do I mean by that, well I will have to take you back a few years to tell you how this one came about. Growing up in London I was always part of the hip hop scene, there wasn’t much of one but there was a small one. A few years ago I found out that there was a bi-weekly open mic hip hop night called Dirty Thursdays. I stopped in one night and was blown away by the talent this city had, I really had no idea! It was nothing like I had seen in London, all these hip hop kids coming together for the love of the music…and the
reaction some of these MC’s were getting was mind blowing….why did it take so long to get a night like this? I felt that it was about time that people outside of London knew what was going on in the Forest City. I decided to reach out to whoever I could and attempt to put together a mixtape comprised of nothing by London MC’s. The plan didn’t end up working and it was put on the backburner and forgotten about. A month ago I got an email from Brent (Just Entertainment) asking me if I would be interested in doing a mixtape for an online hip hop magazine, the only catch was that I had to include an exclusive track from one of his artists (Alex Dimez). I have been involved with a couple of Alex Dimez shows and he had passed my name on to Brent. Now normally all the mixtapes I do are old school hip hop and I just didn’t feel right doing an old school mix and dropping Alex’s track somewhere in the mix. Maybe it was time to go back to my original plan and make some minor adjustments. I reached out to as many London and area MC’s as I could, and MC’s that I have been fortunate to do shows with or have met over the past few years. The response I got was much better this time around and the tracks started flying in to my inbox. Although this mixtape isn’t the all London hip hop mix I had originally planned, I still think that it is close to what I had envisioned. There is still a big London presence on this mixtape from artists that still live in London to artists that are originally from London to artists that are from just outside of London, there are some artists on here that have no London connection whatsoever but somehow we have crossed paths and wanted to be involved. You might look at the track listing and say that you have never heard of 75% of the artists, but in my opinion it’s about time that you do! Please sit back and enjoy what I have called “The Break North Mixtape”, hopefully you all enjoy it!”

Back in 2009, we had the pleasure of posting Disc 1 of Andy Capp’s ‘Bang the Party!’ mix at CR8Apes.com and I know I promised to post up the other half at a later date, but I’ve totally been sitting on the second disc enjoying it all to myself. I personally can’t get enough of this mix and I apologize for keeping it from you, so to make it up to you this is what we’re going to do… Not only are we posting up the second disc for you to enjoy, but we’re also pretty excited to announce that he’ll be joining us to spin at our launch party at Behind the Front Studio on Saturday, May 8th alongside his other Gang of Two member, Rod Skimmins and host/dj extraordinaire, Pooyan.

As you probably know, these guys have been keeping things hot at their successful BANG THE PARTY! nights, so you know this party’s going to be completely off the hook. And, as always, no cover and BYOB at one of the most unique venues in downtown Toronto. We hope to see you there.

Continuing on where ‘Connecting Flight’ left off, this next mix dives deeper into Jamaican ska and shows its transformation into the slower and more relaxed Rocksteady beat. ‘Rude Boy Ruckus’ mixes together tunes from 1963 to 1967 when this significant change occurred and paved way for Reggae music as we know and love today. I’ve put a mix together that breaks down the genre barrier and connects music from, in this case, 8 countries from 4 different continents. ‘Connecting Flight’ mixes together funk, salsa, bossa funk, brazilian & ska tunes from countries such as Germany, Panama, Nigeria and St. Lucia in a way that, hopefully, you don’t even realize that you’ve just travelled through 4 continents in just under 50 minutes. “What’s good, facebook fam!?

It’s been a hella long time since your boy, Brock Boogie dropped a mix, but I’m happy to say I finally made it happen! To put this into perspective, the last mix I released was actually distributed in record shops on cassette in the late 90′s!

This new mix, UP NORTH TRIP!, features 90′s Canadian hip-hop tracks hand-picked from my collection. I had a lot of fun pulling these records & doing this mix. Each of these tracks had heavy rotation in my walkman when I was a teenager, growing up in Toronto.

There’s no crazy post-production or multi-track mixing going on here. This mix was done the old-school way with vinyl, a sampler (for ID hits) and two turntables…all done in one-take!

I hope you dig it, because I hope to keep turning out these mixes on a monthly basis (of various genres).
