Night Moves

Night Moves - Girls Night (day), Oil on canvas, 48" x 24"

Night Moves - Girls Night (night), Oil on canvas, 48" x 24"

Compelled to satisfy the demand for art that caters to the party environment, Adrian created a series of paintings that embody the essence of the nightlife called “Night Moves”.  Excitement and energy is clearly visible in the line work, fluorescent colours, and motion-driven brush strokes of the paintings. Using spray paint and oils, the series blends the rough and rugged feel of the street with the traditional sensibility of classical paintings. This series was originally inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending the Staircase’s method of fragmenting  negative space. Layers of characters painted in an illustrative fashion give an animated effect reminiscent of Meybridge’s photo studies.

Adrian has developed an original method that allows the paintings to be appreciated in both dim and well-lit settings. In high light, the illustrative qualities emerge. In dim settings, the flow of the paintings reveal hidden textures and amplifies the sense of motion, echoing the beats, rhythms and music that inspired them.
